Wells/Robinson/Cochran Scholarships
These scholarships are a result of combining the Earl and Alva Wells, Mary Robinson, and the Joe D. and Illene E. Cochran estate gifts under one scholarship endowment.
The Cochran Scholarship Fund was separate until 2005, when it was brought into together with the other two. It was primarily a loan provider, until it was determined that the entire value of the gift had been loaned out. With the repaid loan money, this gift has been folded into an endowment that now makes scholarship grants only.
The principal of the W/R/C endowment is approximately $160,000. It generates about $8,000 annually from the 5% distribution. (see W/R/C current financial report) This money is used to grant scholarships twice a year to applicants for fall and spring semesters. Applicants must be a member of Wesley UMC, have gone through a confirmation (or similar United Methodist faith, history and beliefs course), and have maintained at least a 2.5 GPA. Full scholarships require at least a 12-hour enrollment minimum for the coming semester. Scholarship recipients that are enrolled in 6-11 hours for the coming semester will receive a half scholarship.
The typical scholarship amount currently is $500-600.
