DIRECTIVES FOR USHERS

It is our goal at Wesley to create a warm and inviting atmosphere where the congregation can freely engage heart and mind in the worship of our Lord.  The usher’s role in this objective is crucial.  YOU are the first impression many visitors have of our church. Your interaction with them can make or break their decision to come back.  For regular attenders, you get to be the friendly and warm contact that makes them glad to be a part of this church.

Also, we want our services to run smoothly.  Distractions will certainly arise periodically, but we want to do everything we can to anticipate and avoid them.  This requires great responsibility and organization from the ushers.

The following are some instructions that will hopefully help clarify roles and responsibilities both before and during the service. 

The usher coordinator will…

• Keep an ongoing list of current ushers and their contact info
• Recruit new ushers as needed
• Create/distribute a schedule for Sunday morning ushers once every three months. 
• Schedule should designate one usher to distribute offering plates and serve the worship team
• Make a phone call or email reminder to each usher the week before they are scheduled to serve
• Enforce the following directives for ushers

The ushers will…

• Be in place no later than 10:10am on designated Sunday
• Greet every person that walks through the doors with a warm smile and/or handshake
• Distribute bulletins and other literature as requested by staff
• Make arrangements for a replacement, if necessary, by:  1) contacting usher coordinator at least one week in advance, or 2) contacting a fellow usher who would be willing to trade
• Come forward for offertory when music begins (verbal cue will not be given)
